I Did the Level 100 Nidoking Glitch in Pokemon Blue but I Encountered a Trainer

The following is a walkthrough of the glitch in Pokémon Yellow version that allows you to catch Mew, without using Action Replay, Gameshark or other third party device. If done properly, following this procedure will result in an encounter with a level 7 Mew on Nugget Bridge.

Steps

  1. 1

Defeat your rival on Nugget Bridge. His first Pokémon will be a Spearow of level 18, so it would be wise to have a Rock or Electric-type Pokémon as the first in your party. After this is completed, you must clear all of the trainers on Nugget Bridge, including the final man who offers you a position in Team Rocket.

  2. 2

DO NOT battle the trainer hiding in the grass to the left of the bridge, as he will be a key part of the glitch later.

  3. 3

Save the game, just in case!

  4. 4

Start to work your way up towards where the other trainers are, battling each trainer and saving after each battle until you reach the trainer who has nothing but a level 17 Slowpoke.

  5. 5

Do not fight him. Shut the game off and resume where you saved at the last trainer you fought (This is not part of the glitch, and if you already know which trainer not to fight you don't have to battle him and shut it off. The video link should help clarify this but if you are unable to access it you will find the saving technique useful).

  6. 6

Find and capture an Abra (try looking in the grass just above the Day Care building). This is harder than one would think because it will teleport away from you on its first turn. It is hard to find, and throwing a Poke Ball on your first turn and crossing your fingers is basically your only option. However, once you've caught Abra you will be able to move on to the next step.

  7. 7

Walk up Nugget Bridge and save when you reach the end. Now is the time to approach the trainer who is hiding in the grass, who you did not battle before.

  8. 8

Walk in front of where he is, far enough away so that he cannot see you, but will see you if you take one step towards Cerulean. Save your game right here, because this next step can be tricky.

  9. 9

Next hit the down arrow and the start button at the same time. You will take a step down toward the trainer, but the start menu will appear instead of the exclamation point above his head. Teleport back to the Pokémon Center with Abra, and walk back up Nugget Bridge. At this point your start menu will be disabled, but do not despair as this is part of the glitch.

  10. 10

Fight the trainer with the level 17 Slowpoke, being sure to have him walk at least one step towards you to battle or the game will freeze.

  11. 11

Defeat him, and teleport back to the Pokémon Center again. Then walk back up Nugget Bridge and your start menu will appear.

  12. 12

Click the B button and a wild Mew will appear at level 7.

  13. 13

Make sure to bring some Poke Balls, and good luck!

  • Question

What should I do if I lose to the final person on the nugget bridge?

    Community Answer

Just go back and try again since the glitch hasn't started yet at this point.

  • Question

Would this glitch work with the 3DS play store download?

    Community Answer

Yes it does work. I have done it myself multiple times after resetting my game

  • Question

    What about The Truck?

    Community Answer

The truck is just a myth. This is the easiest way to catch Mew and the earliest point it is possible to do so.

  • Question

Do I have to beat the slow poke trainer? I was wondering if you could lose so you can battle him again for the Mew in lavender town?

    Community Answer

In Pokemon Red or Blue it is actually possible to get two mews, one from battling the slow poke trainer and one from battling the first trainer in Misty's gym, however it's not possible in Yellow since Abra is found in a different area than Red/Blue. So yes, you have to defeat the slow poke trainer.

  • Question

Does this alter the game later?

    Community Answer

The answer is yes and no. Mew works just like any other Pokemon, so in that sense, no. However, he can learn any TM move, like Mewtwo. So he is extremely diverse in his fighting ability. Also, if you catch all other legendary Pokemon (Zapdos, Articuno, Moltres, Mewtwo), you will have the ability to fill the Pokedex to 151, which is a very neat Easter egg!

  • Question

Can you do this without going to Lavender Town? Or do you have to catch an Abra on a different route? If so, which route can I find an Abra on?

    Community Answer

You can catch an Abra in the grass above the Day Care. It is located under the town with the bridge.

  • Question

What if I have already battled the slowpoke trainer?

    Community Answer

If you have already battled the slowpoke trainer, then you will not be able to get him.

  • Question

Can you get it at the end of the game?

    Community Answer

You can only get it with the glitch now, as Mew was an event-only Pokemon that was given out at the time the games were new.

  • Question

Does this work on a PC?

    Community Answer

Yes, this should work on a PC.

  • Question

Will I be able to retry if I fail?

    Community Answer

Honestly, with rare Pokemon like this, I would save my game before engaging battle, that way if I failed, I could turn off my console and try again. I would think that if you failed to catch it, if it ran away or likewise, you would have another encounter like most of the legendary Pokemon but I would save first anyway.

  • If you're having a hard time catching an Abra, try using a Pokémon with an attack that will put it to sleep to prevent it from using Teleport.

  • Mew can be tricky to catch. However if you search between Mt Moon's exit you might find a Great Ball. I tried this and it made things a lot easier.

  • As long as you follow the steps you can get your Pokémon healed at the Pokémon Center. You also need to visit Bill's house in order to move officer Jenny aside.

  • Overall, this glitch is safe and will not harm your game. If the game freezes during the glitch, just turn the game off and try again.
